DBT Consultation
My background in DBT and DBT PE
At the University of Washington I spent 3 years on Dr. Marsha Linehan's treatment development team, which included a 2-year practicum with extensive coursework, video-observed supervision and feedback from Dr. Linehan and other DBT experts in her clinic, as well as an additional year of instruction and supervision focused on the provision of high quality consultation to community-based DBT teams and therapists. I served as a research therapist on the first NIMH-funded randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the DBT PE Protocol developed by Dr. Melanie Harned, and I co-founded the DBT consultation team with Dr. Harned at VA Puget Sound, where I serve as a research therapist on her current multi-site RCT. I have led DBT and DBT PE intensive trainings both within the VA system and in the community.
Supporting DBT Therapists
Doing DBT is hard! While there is a strong evidence base for DBT, the efficacy of DBT relies on the treatment being delivered with fidelity to the manual. New therapists may need support and consultation to feel comfortable using the treatment with Stage 1 clients and to prepare themselves for LBC certification. Even after intensive training and years in practice, many DBT therapists can become unsure of their ability to deliver the treatment in a manner that is consistent with the kinds of outcomes we see in research studies. Getting consultation in DBT is one way to improve or recalibrate your DBT practice. I provide consultation to therapists in the provision of all modes of DBT: individual, group skills training, phone coaching, and consultation team. I have expertise in coding video or audio-recorded DBT individual therapy sessions using the DBT Adherence Checklist (https://www.dbtadherence.com/), and use this tool to provide therapists with specific data they can use to refine their practice. Furthermore, it is common for DBT teams to need outside support, so I provide team-based consultation as well. I have consulted to providers working within many different types of settings: standard outpatient, intensive outpatient, forensic, residential, and inpatient.
